At long last an informed and researched article about ageing and films in the general press albeit in the French le Monde. Jacques Mandelbaum, journalist and film critic  whose articles are sometimes published in The Guardian, writes about ageing and the cinema.

He considers briefly many aspects of the subject in this article. He touches on the history of the representation of old people in the cinema, on the recent demographic trends and the subsequent increase in films in different genres that deal with an ageing population. He lists 23 films,  not a comprehensive list by any means but enough to give an overview of the changes in representation.

He also considers the cinema attendance figures for some of the films  and notes that there is an increase in old people going to the cinema. He quotes sociologists and philosophers, mentions a festival and a book about the Third Age and films.

In other words the article gives the subject of ageing and films its deserved place in the cultural arena. A far cry from the often ageist critiques that we are served in The Guardian.

It remains for me to research the French films that have not been distributed in England, and take an old feminist view of all this information.
