As you can see in the comments on the Film Guide section, Paola has reminded me of two Cassavetes films that deal with women and age. She wrote her MA dissertation on : Gena Rowlands et le renouveau de la place des actrices vieillissantes dans Opening Night (1977) et Gloria (1980).
Waiting to have time to read the dissertation in full, I was very touched to read in the first page: ” A huge thanks to my mother for her unfailing support and for introducing me one day to the extraordinary actor Gena Rowlands. ”
It is not often remarked that, for us older women, cinema was our most important source of pleasure. It is not recognised that some of us transmit or have transmitted this love to our children and grandchildren.
For me the roles are reversed now. It is my grandson who recommends films to me.
Thanks to Paola for inspiring me to view Gloria and appreciate its implicit comment on intergenerational relationships.
I also think Cassavetes was a great director.
Try to see ‘Opening Night’ and Minnie and Moscowitz which specificaklly deals with the themes of age and ageing.
from the latter;
Reblogged this on intergenerational.
