I was told that in Skyfall the last Bond film Judy Dench has the role of a powerful old woman, M boss of MI6.
I am still reeling from the excess of explosions, dead bodies, train, cars and helicopter crashes without mentioning the commodore dragons. I did laugh at some of the most creative ridiculousness of these events but I am at a loss to understand the pleasure derived from this unrelenting eventually boring violence.
Yes Judy Dench as M is an old woman with all her wrinkles, folds and white hair. The film starts with a serious bad judgement she makes and ends with her death. She does show some defiant, fighting and brave behaviour in the rare scenes when people interact . But interestingly the issue of ageing arises throughout the film not only her ageing and retirement but also Bond’s. But Bond is ready for another adventure.
This is as far as I can go in the consideration of a genre that I know nothing about.
Is there a change in the culture of youth in popular films?
noooooo! you gave away the ending . It hasn’t been released in Australia yet. Bad form Rina!
So sorry about this Margaret.I hope it will not spoil your experience. In the future I will try not to forget Australia. Has Amour been released in Australia?
I forgive you Rina. No Amour has been released here yet.
I look forward to the day when Judie Dench, or even better Miriam Margolyes, will be 007 at the centre of the narrative. Imagine how much more interesting that would be! I think it’s good that she plays a reasonably significant role, but ultimately with Bond everybody is awash in a sea of testosterone, which severely hampers imagination and creativity in the franchise…
